This time on holiday truffle making…cinnamon bun truffles! Smooth and creamy cinnamon bun-inspired filling coated in a thin layer of white chocolate makes these cinnamon bun truffles addictive. They’re simple to make and even simpler to eat. They’re great as gifts or fora little late-night snack for yourself. No sharing necessary.
When I originally made this recipe back in 2017, I used the seasonal flavor of cinnamon bun Oreos. They were amazing. I’m not always in the mood for cinnamon, but man, I ate those Oreos like candy. My fiance and I would wreck family-sized packs of cinnamon bun Oreos like nobody’s business. But, because it’s a limited edition flavor they no longer make them in the US. You can still find them online with a little digging, but apparently they have to be imported from Canada.
There is a similar flavor currently available (2024) called churro creme. Similar, but with more of a buttery flavor in addition to the cinnamon. But since they’re also a limited edition, I’m worried they won’t be around long-term either. So this time around when I made my cinnamon bun truffles, I used the Trader Joe’s cinnamon JoJos, and they still came out fantastic. Hopefully, between all three cookie options, you’ll be able to find the right ingredients to make these truffles. And trust me, you want cinnamon bun truffles in your life!
This recipe is quite simple and quite delicious. It only requires 5 ingredients and gets whipped up in a jiff. The active part of this recipe is pretty minimal, but there is some wait time required to let the fillings rest in the fridge before coating. But if you’re like me and your partner is out of town on business trips, well throw on a little Hamilton and dance around your kitchen while you’re waiting!
Inspired by Coco & Ash’s Oreo Ball Truffles, I wanted to make some easy truffles but wanted to try a fun new flavor. I already have a recipe for cookies and cream truffles that use the classic Oreo. Plus the cream cheese in this recipe inspires thoughts of cream cheese icing which is always the perfect pairing to cinnamon buns in my book.
The key to smooth and silly cinnamon bun truffles is to start with room-temperature cream cheese. And besides, it’ll be easier to mix. I like to use my food processor to get a fine crumb on the cookies but don’t forget to reserve a cookie or some of your crumbles for topping your truffles.
I like to reserve a cookie or two for the topping and remove the cream. Add the cream back to the rest of the cookies used for the filling but keep the dry cookie and crumble it for the topping. Since it’s dry, it’ll retain the crunch and make perfect crumbles to sprinkle over the top.
Don’t pinch too many cookies as you make these cinnamon bun truffles otherwise, you’ll need to get some more to finish making the recipe! I may or may not be talking from experience here. And if you manage to have leftovers, then use the extras in these mini cinnamon cheesecakes.
Let me know what you think of these! I always love to hear good ideas for interesting truffles, and you can see the whole slew of truffles I made last year: candy shop truffles. I always make the favorites, but I like to experiment with new flavors too!
