tootsie roll rice krispies;
A double chocolatey take on rice krispies treats, this tootsie roll rice krispies recipe adds not only extra chocolate, but an extra chew! Tootsie rolls have such a distinct milky flavor, paired with the perfect chew that makes them oh-so-delicious in this recipe.
For these chocolatey bad boys, go with cocoa puffed rice. The cocoa in the chocolate really pairs perfectly with the sweet milk chocolate flavor of tootsie rolls. While both ingredients have a mild chocolate flavor on their own they really complement each other together in one bite.
Tootsie rolls are one of those candies I half forget about until Halloween rolls around. But they’re also so much better than I remember every time I eat one. Provided that they’re fresh and chewy. The extra chewy nature of these tootsie roll rice krispies treats is just perfect! Especially when they’re just a touch warm still.
Trying to bite into a rock solid old tootsie roll is literally the worst. I like cutting even the individual tootsie rolls in two to spread them out further throughout the tootsie roll Rice Krispies so you get more even bites.
I’ve actually attempted to make my own tootsie rolls a while ago and they turned out surprisingly not half bad. I did end up using buttermilk powder instead of plain milk powder so they had a weird tangy bite to them that was odd, but I need to go back and try again. That said, name brand works fine and great for these tootsie roll Rice Krispies and, in general, when I’m making Rice Krispies treats, I’m not looking for extra work for myself! Maybe one day I’ll go back and revisit that homemade tootsie roll recipe.
If you don’t want to double down on the chocolate (but who wouldn’t?) these tootsie roll rice krispies would still go great with the classic original puffed rice instead of chocolate puffed rice. Or even better, combine tootsie rolls with these mocha rice krispies for extra chewy chocolate in every mocha bite!
Pro tip, if you don’t eat all your tootsie roll Rice Krispies in the first day (or right off the stove), pop them in the microwave for 5-10 seconds to release that ooey gooey goodness right before eating. If you need an extra fix of chocolate, try a chocolate drizzle over your bars once they’ve set up nicely!

tootsie roll rice krispies treats;
Ingredients
brown butter rice krispie treats;
- 3 cups cocoa puffed rice cereal (Rice Krispies)
- 3 Tbsp salted butter
- ¾ tsp kosher salt
- 8 oz large marshmallows (¾ bag of jumbo marshmallows)
- 12 mini tootsie rolls
Instructions
- Prepare a loaf pan by spraying lightly with cooking oil and lining with parchment paper so the paper sticks to the pan. Then lightly spray the parchment paper to prepare for the treats.
- Unwrap tootsie rolls and cut each mini tootsie roll in half. Set aside 5-8 pieces if you want to press them into the tops at the end.
- Melt 3 Tbsp butter in a medium pot. Add ½ tsp salt and cook the butter until toasty over medium heat.
- Remove from the heat and add marshmallows. Stir constantly until marshmallows begin melting. Once marshmallows have started to dissolve, add the pot back onto low heat and continue stirring until fully melted.
- Crush 1½ cups of Cocoa Rice Krispies. I just roughly crush them in my hand as I add them to the melted marshmallows.
- Stir so everything is coated. Add the remaining ¼ tsp salt, remaining 1½ cup Rice Krispies, and the tootsie rolls and mix until everything is coated evenly.
- Don’t use your hands, the marshmallow may be hot! Using another piece of parchment paper, or the flat bottom of a glass, press lightly into the corners and flatten the treats. You can also give a light dusting of cooking spray to your surface to help keep it from sticking. Press the reserved tootsie roll halves into the top if desired.
- Allow treats to set for at least an hour before cutting and serving.
