jellied chocolate frogs;
table of contents;
Take your Harry Potter sorting hat experience to a whole new delicious level! Chocolate frogs with jelly centers represent each of the four Hogwarts Houses: Slytherin green, Gryffindor red, Hufflepuff yellow, and Ravenclaw blue. These fun treats are the perfect addition to any Harry Potter-themed party, or perfect for little witches or goblins on Halloween!
I cooked up the idea for these jellied chocolate frogs as a fun treat to round out a Harry Potter movie marathon. I’ve wanted to make chocolate frogs for a long while, but I never took the plunge. All it took was eight movies and a ski trip to convince me to finally make some chocolate frogs. And let me tell you, I had a lot of fun cooking up flavor options.
Inspired by one of my favorite candies, raspberry jelly rings, I used Butter with a Side of Bread’s homemade jelly stick recipe as a starting place but then got whacky with the flavors. Keep reading for not only the flavors I used here, but a whole bunch of additional flavor ideas!
But before we get to all the fun jellied centers, let’s start with the frog part of these jellied chocolate frogs. For chocolate frogs, you need frog molds. Because these jellied chocolate frogs are somewhat involved, I choose to use candy coating for these chocolate frogs. Candy coating is a chocolate compound that makes it easy to melt and solidify, and is a great option for chocolate frogs because they’re already very involved with molds and multiple colors and flavors.
Candy coating doesn’t require specific temperatures, and in general, is much less temperamental than when tempering chocolate from scratch. If you’re interested in tempering chocolate, check out my guide to the seeding method. But we’ll leave that for another post because it takes quite a bit of time and technique. For this post and recipe, I’ll be detailing the use of chocolate candy coating.
My personal favorite is Guittard A’Peels. I love their flavor, are reasonably priced, and I have fewer issues with streaking than with some other brands. That said, they’re a little less common than my second choice: Ghirardelli coating wafers. Ghirardelli coating wafers are easily found in grocery stores, target, and on amazon, to name a few. They still taste yummy, but in my experience are slightly more prone to streaking. Streaking in your chocolate is just a separation of fats. It won’t affect the flavor, but it just doesn’t look quite as nice. Luckily, it’s still tasty as all heck!
Both brands come in white, dark, and milk chocolate options, so choose your favorite! My go-to will always be dark chocolate, but it’s a personal preference. Remember to use the same flavor of chocolate across each of the different Hogwarts house colors. Otherwise, you’ll ruin the “sorting” effect because folks will be able to tell which flavor is which.
You can also use candy melts or candiquick if that’s your preference, but I find these too sweet for my palate. That said, they’re very readily available at craft stores or grocery stores, and will absolutely work. They also are less prone to streaking because they stick to the cocoa butter side of chocolate inclusion.
Now comes the jelly part of jellied chocolate frogs. I had a lot of fun coming up with flavor options for these Hogwarts Houses! The key of course is the color, to indicate each of the houses. Slytherin is green, Gryffindor is red, Hufflepuff is yellow, and Ravenclaw is blue. We start with a Jell-O base, which will give you the brilliant colors of your jellies.
To your Jell-O base flavor and color, you’ll want to add an extra punch of flavor. In general, there are three ways to add additional flavor that I recommend. First is extracts. These are concentrated flavors you’re probably familiar with–think mint extract, or vanilla extract, but you can often find fruit flavors or specialty extracts like coconut as well. For an extract, use ½ tsp extract to start and then adjust to taste.
The second option for boosting flavor is 1 Kool-Aid packet. Now you’re somewhat limited to the available flavors, but they’re a fun way to pack a wallop of flavor into your jellied chocolate frogs. Be careful though–Kool-aid packets have their own food coloring, so you do need to match your desired color. So yes to adding blue raspberry lemonade Kool-aid to berry blue Jell-O for a Ravenclaw frog, but no to adding cherry Kool-aid to your lemon Jell-O or you’ll fade Hufflepuff’s yellow to a weird off-orange color. Still, these are some of the funnest flavors you can get in your jellied chocolate frogs.
Thirdly, you can go straight to concentrated candy flavorings. For novelty recipes like these chocolate frogs, I like Lorann’s candy flavoring oils. While they’re not the highest quality flavorings you can find on the market, they come in 1-dram bottles and are reasonably priced. You can find them at craft stores like Michael’s or on Amazon. These flavorings are so concentrated that you only need ~5 drops. You could use one 1 dram bottle in at least 4-5 batches of these frogs. You can of course substitute other brand flavorings if you prefer, but you may have to adjust based on the concentration of their flavor.
Slytherin
Slytherin’s colors are green and silver and is home to a lot of cunning and brilliant (and often evil) wizards. As far as I’m aware, the only green Jell-O flavor available is lime. Luckily lime is a delicious flavor that can be paired with multiple flavors!
raspberry lime;
The flavor I chose in the recipe below is a raspberry lime. With a green lime Jell-O base and super concentrated raspberry flavoring, you get both flavors in every bite without compromising on the green color. (P.S. If you love the combination of raspberry and lime, check out this raspberry lime cheesecake.)
additional flavors;
But if raspberry lime doesn’t float your boat, consider these additional options!
- lemon-lime: lime Jell-O & pair with 1 packet of lemonade koolaid OR ½ tsp lemon extract
- coconut lime: lime Jell-O & ½ tsp coconut extract
- lime punch: lime Jell-O & ½ tsp lime extract OR 5 drops lime candy oil
Gryffindor
The brave-at-heart Gryffindor show off their pride in scarlet and gold. With red as their defining color, you have lots of flavor options at your fingertips!
black cherry;
I went with a classic cherry flavor because, truthfully, I already had cherry Jell-O at home. One less flavor to buy! But you can’t go wrong with the bright scarlet red of cherry, and cherry pairs so well with dark chocolate. It ends up giving a very black forest cake vibe, that I am totally here for. You can add cherry Kool-Aid to the mixture for additional flavor, or Lorann’s cherry flavoring. Or add a different berry to the mix–I’ve also tried these with Lorann’s strawberry candy flavoring and I really like the combination.
additional flavors;
It’s fun here to experiment with different red Jell-O base flavors since there are multiple to choose from.
- cherry root beer: cherry Jell-O & 5 drops of root beer candy flavoring
- classic raspberry: raspberry Jell-O & 5 drops raspberry candy flavoring (these are reminiscent of traditional raspberry jelly rings!)
- strawberry kiwi: strawberry Jell-O & add 5 drops of strawberry kiwi candy flavoring
Hufflepuff
Hufflepuffs value friendship and a true and loyal. You can’t ask for a better friend than a Hufflepuff! Hufflepuffs’ signature colors are yellow and black. With yellow Jell-O you have two options to choose from: lemon or pineapple, both of which make for some great potential flavors.
pina colada;
Tropical flavors? Sign me up! Add a dash of coconut to a pineapple Jell-O base, and you’ve got yourself a party in a frog! So easy and tasty, take your fellow Hufflepuffs to the beach with one chocolatey bite.
additional flavors;
If you’re looking for some pina colada alternatives, look no further!
- tropical punch: pineapple Jell-O & 5 drops mango candy flavoring
- limoncello: lemon Jell-O & pair with ½ tsp lemon extract OR 1 packed lemonade Kool-aid
- citrus peel: lemon Jell-O & add ½ tsp orange extract
Ravenclaw
Ravenclaws are wise and value knowledge and intellect. Ravenclaw’s colors are blue and silver, so of course we need to find a brilliant blue for these jellied chocolate frogs. Lucky for us, Jell-O has a berry blue flavor that makes the perfect base for several different flavors.
blue raspberry;
Start with the berry blue Jell-O for a brilliant blue color, and add to that one blue raspberry lemonade Kool-Aid packet to amp up that blue raspberry flavor even more. If you eat one of these frogs before a test, will you be sure to ace it?
additional flavors;
There’s only one blue Jell-O base flavor, so all of these will start with your berry blue Jell-O. You might think Ravenclaw blue would be limiting, but with a little creativity, you can still play up the berry flavors, so pick your favorite!
- blue straw-raspberry: berry blue Jell-O & 5 drops strawberry candy flavoring
- blue raspberry & cream: berry blue Jell-O & 5 drops blue raspberry candy flavoring. After you pour your blue mixture into the frog mold, add a little dollop of Cool Whip and use a toothpick to swirl through for a fun marbled effect.
- black and blue berries: berry blue Jell-O & 5 drops of blackberry candy flavoring OR 5 drops of blueberry candy flavoring

Instructions
jelly frog centers;
- For each of the house colors, repeat these instructions to make jelly frog centers.
- Prepare your 8-cavity frog mold with a generous spray of cooking spray to make sure they release easily from the molds. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, add ¼ cup cold water, and then sprinkle in the unflavored gelatin. Using a small whisk or fork, mix together to ensure a smooth consistency without clumps.
- In a medium pot add the Jell-O in your chosen color together with ½ cup sugar, and ¼ cup + 2 Tbsp hot water. Bring the mixture to a simmer and stir until all ingredients are dissolved.Slytherin: green lime; Gryffindor: red black cherry; Hufflepuff: yellow pineapple; Ravenclaw: blue berry
- Add the prepared gelatin mixture into the pot and break it up with a spatula, stirring until it dissolves. Allow the mixture to boil on medium-low heat for 10 minutes.
- Remove from the heat, and stir in flavoring extract. Pour into prepared molds, making sure not to fill them to the brim. Leave ~¼" from the top. Optionally use a toothpick to pop any bubbles on top, or use a spoon to lift off any foam.Slytherin: 5 drops lorann's raspberry flavoring; Gryffindor: cherry Kool-Aid packet; Hufflepuff: ½ tsp coconut extract; Ravenclaw: blue raspberry lemonade Kool-Aid packet
- Allow mixture to cool at least 2 hours. Once cool and jellied remove from the molds and set aside.
chocolate frogs;
- Start with clean, dry frog molds, making sure there's no residue or oil prior to starting to make the chocolate frogs. For each flavor of jellied frog, you'll need 10 oz chocolate candy coating.
- Melt 5oz dark chocolate candy coating according to instructions. Pour equal amount into each cavity and tilt the mold or use a spoon or spatula to make sure the whole cavity is covered.
- Quickly add in your jellied frog to the center of the mold, pressing gently to secure it into the chocolate.
- Melt additional 5oz dark chocolate candy coating according to instructions, and fill any remaining space in each cavity with chocolate. Make sure to tap your mold on the counter to release any air bubbles.
- Allow to set at least 2-4 hours (or according to package instructions). De-mold your chocolate frogs, and enjoy!
