I love this recipe for s’mores chocolate hummus. It might be a new obsession. Think a heathful version of brownie batter you can eat straight off a spoon, or spread on anything. Is it exactly the same as dipping your finger in a brownie batter bowl? Well no, of course not. The chocolatey flavor is all there, but this chocolate hummus is creamier and thicker than uncooked brownie batter.
Chocolate hummus may sound a bit odd at first. I know my first question was: can’t you taste the chickpeas?! But the cocoa powder and chocolate surprisingly manages to overpower any savory taste. My personal favorite is to add in a few chocolate chips as well, so you get some added texture, and little pockets of true chocolate.
To get the smoothest hummus possible, there’s two tricks. One: spend the time to pinch the skins from your canned chickpeas. This takes a while, but I find it therapeutic. That said, when I’m in a low-patience mood, I’ve also skipped this step and just thrown the washed beans directly in the blender.
To get the smoothest hummus possible there are two tricks. Remove the chickpea skins, and use ice.

The second trick is to start blending the ingredients and then add in a few small pieces of ice and blend it for 3-5 minutes. The ice helps create a smooth, creamy texture. It helps emulsify the ingredients to keep them rich and cohesive, and also keeps the mixture cold as it incorporates air.
Chocolate hummus is definitely a new go-to. Play up the summer s’mores theme by loading up your chocolate hummus with marshmallows and chocolate chips, and dip graham crackers into the chocolate spread. If you’re looking to get more fruits and veggies in, try dipping strawberries to make a protein-rich chocolate-covered-strawberry. Or bananas, or any other favorite food you have. Get all that chocolatey deliciousness you crave without added guilt.
The flavor possibilities are endless. S’mores is my favorite with marshmallows and chocolate chips, but try cookies and cream, or add fresh fruit.
secret to success
The possibilities are endless, really, just use your imagination. Dip with graham crackers, or make it cookies and cream with crushed oreos. Heck, use it as frosting on a cake, or slather it on some warm toast as a healthful alternative to nutella. Just make sure you watch how much you’re eating otherwise you’ll eat the whole batch in one sitting!
If using crispy elements, add them right before serving. Otherwise they’ll get soggy if you store them together.

Chocolate chips are fine to mix into the chocolate hummus and store together. But if you have crackers or other crispy elements, I recommend waiting to add toppings until you sit down to eat it. Otherwise, they’ll get soggy. Having some crispy elements adds fun texture. If graham crackers aren’t your thing, try nilla wafers. Or use teddy grahams to go diving in your chocolate hummus! There’s so many ways to make this quick and easy recipe fun.
Even though I originally made this recipe for chocolate hummus when I was trying out weight watchers, but it’s become a staple. I always pull it out for parties as a healthy, easy make-ahead recipe. If you have your own favorite flavor, be sure to leave it in the comments–I’m thinking maybe I need a chocolate peanut butter version, or a chocolate orange version soon!
