Strawberry chocolate sprinkle fruit taco

Originally posted March 2, 2018. Updated May 15, 2026 for content and clarity.

These flaky little bite-sized fruit tacos are delicious and perfect for sharing!  I made them for a superbowl party back in 2018 and they were a huge hit. They can get a little messy like regular tacos, but what’s a good dessert without a little mess??  Especially when it comes in apple pie or strawberry form.  Lemon really brightens the apple pie filling, and strawberries are just so fresh. You can’t go wrong with some berries and cream. My favorite part is that this whole dessert is not too sweet! (Or as sweet as you want to make it.)

When making the cinnamon crunch taco shells, I prefer to sprinkle cinnamon sugar on the outside of the shell. That way it’s the first thing that hits your tongue. You can sprinkle both sides if you prefer for extra cinnamon! Keep in mind that sugar on the outside can make a stick my mess, so it’s best to clean your muffin tin as soon as it cools. But I promise you it’s totally worth it!

Secret to success
Colorful dessert tacos with toppings

One of the benefits of cinnamon crunch fruit tacos is that you can prepare ahead and serve it warm or cold! If you prefer a warm apple filling then heat it up before serving or serve fresh from the stovetop. Strawberries I almost always serve chilled. Or you know, scrap the tacos and just eat the fillings with a spoon. I won’t tell. It’s even healthy! Fresh fruit and only a sprinkle of cinnamon and butter for the apple pie filling.

You can decorate up you cinnamon crunch fruit tacos however you want, but honestly I just enjoy them plain half the time. There’s plenty of sweetness on the taco shell itself, and it lets the ripe flavors of apple or strawberry be the highlight of every bite. But ice cream, sprinkles, chocolate chips, whipped cream, caramel, chocolate sauce—you name it, you can make it your own delicious crunchy bite.

Don’t sleep on a classic unadorned cinnamon crunch taco! Or load it up with your favorite ice cream or toppings!

If you don’t have wonton or dumpling wrappers, you can also punch circles out of regular tortillas. Somehow it feels like there’s more waste between the small cutouts, and personally I like the light and crispy texture of the wonton wrappers. You’ll need to adjust your bake time for tortillas. Since they’re generally thicker, it’ll take a little longer to bake. Watch your shells like a hawk though—it only takes a matter of seconds to go from crisp golden brown to charred and black.

If you don’t have wonton or dumpling wrappers, you can punch circles from a large tortilla. Just remember to adjust bake time.

Secret to success

I opted to leave off the ice cream for the party since I didn’t want it to melt and make the tacos limp as people grabbed them in between plays.  I figured caramel was much more manageable for a crowd.  But these would be so cute with a dollop of whipped cream, or ice cream, or honestly, just make it a dessert taco bar!  I think that’d be amazing for kids.  Try these out and let me know in the comments below what you think!

Instructions

cinnamon sugar tacos;

  • To make the cinnamon sugar, add ½ Tbsp cinnamon and 3 Tbsp sugar to a small bowl. Mix until combined.
    (If making apple pie filling, combine 1½ Tbsp cinnamon and 6 Tbsp sugar, and set aside half.)
  • If using round dumpling wrappers skip this step. If using wonton or square wrappers, use a cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut large ~3" circles from the dough. Lay aside.
  • Lay the wonton wrappers out in a single layer (this can be done in batches). Wonton wrappers are typically thinner than dumpling wrappers so I will double them up.
  • Turn over a muffin pan (or multiple) and spray the bottom generously with cooking spray. Arrange the wonton wrappers to form taco shells, by curving each wrapper into a shell and sandwiching between two muffin cups.
    (Alternatively, you can spray muffin tins and press the wonton wrappers into the concave side to make little bowls instead of tacos.)
  • Bake at 400°F for 5-10 minutes (dumpling wrappers are thicker and may take longer) or until ightly crisp and browned. Watch them closely as they can burn easily. I recommend placing each muffin tray on a sheet pan to make it easier to take in and out of the oven and catch any sugar so it doesn't burn in your oven.
    Mine take about 8 minutes in the oven at full temp, then I turned off the oven and let them sit for 10-15 minutes.

strawberry filling;

  • Hull and finely dice ½ lb of strawberries. Add to a medium bowl, and toss with 2 Tbsp sugar. Set aside.

apple pie filling;

  • Dice apples finely, and retrieve the set aside cinnamon sugar mixture from step 1 or mix together 1 Tbsp cinnamon and 3 Tbsp sugar and set aside.
    Add them to a pot over medium heat with 1 Tbsp butter. Add the reserved cinnamon sugar mixture or mix together 1 Tbsp cinnamon and 3 Tbsp sugar and add to the pot.
  • Heat a pot over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp butter. Once melted, add the apples, cinnamon sugar, and juice from ½ a large lemon and stir until coated.
  • Allow to simmer. You may add 1-2 Tbsp of water if the filling seems dry or the bottom is at risk of burning. Once apples are tender and no longer crisp, add 1 tsp cornstarch and stir to thicken.
  • Remove apple pie filling from the heat, and allow to cool.

toppings & tacos;

  • Fill each shell with apple pie or strawberry filling and top with caramel sauce, whipped cream, sprinkles, ice cream, or any other ice cream toppings you can think of. Consider setting out a taco bar for everyone to help themselves!

    Fantastic recipe! The cinnamon makes the cinnamon crunch tacos next-level, on top of the great fruit fillings. This is so easy to make, too. Plus there are so many suggestions given if you want to customize your own!
