Halloween Cocktail in a tall and skinny potion bottle, with blue liquid sitting on red liquid

This Halloween cocktail is dark and enticing. With blue curaçao, grenadine, pineapple juice, and coconut rum, it’s actually a surprisingly tropical Halloween cocktail. But I love the color blue and the little bit of sinister red at the bottom. It’s very festive, and I think the blue makes for a great potion color.

So let’s break it down. I bought a variety of these glass potion bottles for a fun little Dungeons and Dragons game we had last year. The idea was that our characters had to pick a potion and each potion conveyed different abilities. I left the role playing details to the Dungeon Master, but I was mixologist! And this Elixir of the Night was born.

Hand holding a blue cocktail that fades to red in a tall square potion bottle

I used a tall bottle here, from Michael’s. This bottle has a square base and is tall and skinny, and holds approximately 4.5oz of liquid, or around 125ml. Here’s a link to the specific bottle I used, in case you’re interested in picking up your own. I mention this only so you can adjust the recipe if you want to use a regular glass. I’ll make sure the break down the required steps so even if you’re tweaking, you can still get the cool layered effect.

So getting and keeping the layered effect can be tricky. The reason you can achieve this layered effect is because of the density of the liquids. Essentially the grenadine liquid is denser and stays on the bottom while the blue mixture floats on top. It’s pretty cool, but it can be a little tough to get right. But I think the layered effect adds to the thematic coolness of the Halloween cocktail. It makes it something extra special.

Obviously, pour the grenadine first. This layer is the simplest and easiest since there’s nothing else in the glass yet. Therefore you don’t need to be overly cautious, just don’t miss your bottle (or cup). In a separate glass or measuring cup, mix the other ingredients: curaçao, rum, and pineapple juice and stir to combine. This layer will sit on top of the grenadine. But don’t just pour it immediately on top. While the mixtures are different densities, they can still mix and become homogenous (aka one purple mixture). So you’ll want to be careful and go slow. The way to do this is to pour with a light hand so you don’t disturb the red layer.

Elixer of the Night, a blue and red layered cocktail in a potion bottle

For the bottle that I was using, I needed a thin wooden skewer. Any kind of skewer or long object works. If you’re pouring a glass of this, you can use a spoon. Angle the spoon to rest against the side of the glass or bottle. You’ll want to pour the liquid slowly and carefully down the instrument you’re using. I mean super slow, super tiny flow. This way the liquid clings to your instrument and runs down the side of your glass or bottle.

This achieves the desired effect of stacking the layers instead of mixing them. It might take a try or two, but don’t get discouraged. The drink is still drinkable even if they mix! And hey, purple is a pretty “color of the night” in my book so you could always say that’s what you intended. Fair warning: consuming alcoholic failed attempts may hinder future attempts at pouring.

Let me know what you think of this Halloween cocktail recipe! I don’t have a good mocktail suggestion for this one because I haven’t tested the layering effect. If you’re looking for kiddo options, I would try blue Hawaiian Punch swapped in for the curacao and rum. I suspect that it would likely still float on top of the grenadine, but I can’t guarantee it. If you try it yourself, let me know in the comments!

Secrets to Success

  • Follow the instructions carefully to keep the layers from mixing. You can use any long and skinny (and foodsafe) implement to get the desired effect.
  • If the cocktail ends up mixing together, you can start over, or just claim that purple was the intended color. It’s a dark and moody color, so it fits with the “Elixir of the Night” theme.

Equipment

  • A wooden or metal skewer, spoon, or instrument to achieve the layered effect.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz grenadine
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz blue curacao
  • 1 oz coconut rum (I use Malibu)

Instructions

  • Add 1 oz of grenadine to your cup or potion bottle.
  • In a separate measuring cup or glass, combine the pineapple juice, blue curacao, and coconut rum. Stir to combine.
  • Using a wooden or metal skewer (or a spoon if you have an opening wide enough to use), angle the instrument diagonally, so the tip is touching the side of your glass or bottle. Gently and slowly pour the blue mixture down the instrument so it gently flows and sits on top of the red layer.
  • Make sure not to stir or shake and serve cold.
