dinner review: space bar;
As I feel like I express on this blog…life is a little crazy~! Tyler and I have recently moved into our new house, and while there have been some tasty recipes made for our housewarming party and for ourselves on crazy weeknights and weekends, I’ve been struggling with actually posting them.
The week before we moved, the crazy Kenichi puppy whipped his rope toy around into my laptop screen and broke it. I ordered a new laptop through Costco, and while previously I’ve had good experiences with Costco and their customer service, they cancelled my order not once, but TWICE, on the grounds that they “couldn’t verify my name with the shipping address”. Presumably because we just BOUGHT the house and MOVED, and it’s not my fault your system sucks. Who cares where it goes if I’ve paid for the thing? Anyway, rant aside, I think you’ll be out of luck with some new recipes for a while, and I apologize! I’ll try to share some of my existing favorite recipes on social media, and so far there are over 200 posts already on the blog for you to browse!

One of my old friends from high school visited a while back and I never got around to posting my review of Space Bar! Peggy and I had been trying to meet up forever…and it finally happened! Peggy and I were super close in high school. We were the kind of friends that could just talk and talk forever because I always loved hearing what she had to say, and I like to think it was mutual. But I didn’t see her much through college and post college she was in China with the Peace Corps, so understandably we drifted apart a bit.
But now she’s been back in the US for a while, up in Boston and she found time to come visit! We agreed that all we wanted to do was chill and catch up. Tyler was excited to meet her, and I’m happy to say that both parties approved of the other! In addition to the multitude of food that I made (recipes like pull apart bread), we made it to this little dive bar in Falls Church I’ve heard about from several friends: Space Bar!
If you haven’t been able to tell from the pictures yet–they do grilled cheese! That’s pretty much all they do other than a few sides like tots and fries, and beer is their jam. It was a cool place! Definitely tiny, not particularly metro accessible, but still hopping when we went around 5:30-6 on a Saturday. I grabbed a local VA beer and went with the BBQ grilled cheese which was delicious! Honestly it was more BBQ sandwich than grilled cheese in my opinion, not that I’m complaining. I think after going most of their sandwiches are that way. More sandwiches than grilled cheese, although they all have cheese. Not bad, because it feels like you’re getting your money’s worth, and tasty for sure, but not sure my go to name for the sandwiches was “grilled cheese”.
They also have build your own totchos! We decided to share a small between the three of us, and man, that was the right decision. It was a lot of rich food, and the size of the small made me scared to know what a large was! We went with cheese, bacon, and avocados, which made for an interesting and tasty mix, but you can add pretty much any ingredient from their menu to the tots.
Overall I give it a solid 4 out of 5 chips (read: stars). The food was good, but I dock points for lack of parking/walkability and the fact that it was crowded. A fun experience and good sandwiches, but I’d have to be in the right mood to wrestle with the parking and waiting for a table!
