3-ingredient s’mores dip;
This three-ingredient s’mores dip is perfect for warm summer nights when you want s’mores but can’t stand thinking about lighting a fire in that heat. Or maybe summer thunderstorms are ruining your plans. Well, this 3-ingredient s’mores dip can be made super quick in your oven.
The base of any good s’mores dip is chocolate. In a recipe that has only three ingredients, every ingredient is a star in its own way. There’s nothing stopping you from using Hershey’s chocolate if you’re a purist. But there are so many better quality chocolates out there, that I prefer to use a rich, high-quality bar.
For chocolate bars, Trader Joe’s is a go to. They used to carry my favorite semisweet chocolate chunks, but recently I’ve seen them start to carry 5 lb chocolate bars. I really like the quality of chocolate and there are multiple options to choose from.
Chocolate and marshmallow is a classic combination you can’t go wrong with. Another added benefit of using bars is that if you want to amp up the flavor profile, all you have to do is select your favorite bar!
Try orange chocolate for a sweet fruity option. Or like a little crunch? Grab an almond bar (Trader Joe’s has these in their 5lb versions). Of course you can add your own nuts too but why do the extra work?! Grab a cookies and cream bar or even some Reese’s instead for a peanut butter swirl.
If you want to use Reese’s, I’d also still supplement with some milk chocolate so you have enough chocolate for the dipping and then chop the Reese’s cups and scatter them throughout. The peanut butter filling doesn’t really melt so it’s easier to break them up in advance for a dip form.
In fact, if you’re willing to add a whole fourth ingredient, I’d skip the Reese’s cups entirely, just grab a bar of milk chocolate like the original recipe and swirl some smooth peanut butter over top. That way the peanut butter will be more evenly spread through the s’mores dip for every bite!
Then top with marshmallows. Small, large, colored—choose your character! Any will work, I used the jumbo marshmallows here because they make for the best fire-toasting marshmallows and I wanted a callback to that campfire s’more. Mini would work just as well!
Toast it up. Make sure to melt your chocolate first. The marshmallows only need a few minutes under the broiler to get that classic toasty marshmallow char. Since the chocolate is thicker and takes longer to melt, it needs some TLC in the heat. If you have a blowtorch available, you can skip the broiler and just blast the marshmallows however you see fit. But the oven works great and since you have to use it to melt the chocolate anyway, I find the oven the most convenient.
Once you’ve achieved the perfect toasty marshmallow, remove from the oven. Because we did use the oven, the dish will be HOT—so be careful!
Use graham crackers for dipping. Schar makes gluten-free graham crackers if you need to accommodate dietary preferences, or good old classic Nabisco graham crackers work great. But if you’re up to the task, making your own oat flour graham crackers are so worth the extra effort. Snappy, and with a rich molasses flavor, these are so much better than storebought. They’re even gluten-free!
For some fun alternatives, try teddy grahams, nilla wafers, ice cream cones, or any of your favorite cookies. I haven’t checked recently, but I’ve even used Trader Joe’s wafer cookies or miniature chocolate-filled cones. The sky’s the limit, just dip everything in sight!
If you’ve got a themed event, you can always add some bling right before serving! For the Fourth of July, sprinkle red and blue sprinkles over the top. For Halloween, put a few globs of red gel food coloring over the marshmallows and let the dipping smear it all around. Add some candy pumpkins too.
