A cocktail as beautiful as it is delicious. With grenadine and chambord, this cherry and raspberry cocktail fades into a clear lemon-lime soda.

Halloween cocktail in a potion bottle, with a red layer at the bottom topped with clear liquid

As far as Halloween cocktails go, this might be my favorite. It has that wow factor, with only a tiny bit of easy magic. Three ingredients, and just omit the alcohol for a mocktail. Without the alcohol you’re serving a Shirley temple, and who doesn’t love that? I know I loved them as a child, honestly more for the novelty than the flavor. It just seemed fancy as a child. Especially since we were a family that pretty much orders water when we go out. You could garnish the drink with some cherries if you’re serving it in a glass for a little extra flair. I don’t recommend shoving cherries down the spout of the potion bottle though.

It took a couple of tries to get the flavors on this right but I just love Chambord and sprite. (Another version used tequila, and another with vodka, but I settled on Chambord.) So simple and classy, but a delicious taste. If you want to up the alcohol content you can mix some vodka into the sprite, or just add more Chambord.

This bottle holds approximately 7 oz or approx 225 ml of liquid from my measurements. I love the bottle I picked for this one because you can see the gradient so well and it’s such a stark contrast. I picked it up at Michael’s, here’s the direct link if you like this bottle shape specifically. You can get a fun variety of bottle shapes at Michael’s or other retailers.

That’s what I did for these five Halloween cocktails I’m sharing, but for a party I’d go for one or two cocktails. And then I’d pick one or two favorite bottle shapes and pre-mix them and allow guests to just grab them off the table. I’d also leave out a pitcher or ingredients so people could refill. Because with this Phoenix Breath Halloween Cocktail, I’d sure be back for more! You could even print a cute sign with drink ingredients. That way guests would know how to make the drink if they wanted more.

To achieve the layered effect, we’ll be playing on the different densities of the liquids. The lower density allows the soda to float on top of the other two layers and creates this amazing ombre effect. Don’t pour one liquid directly into the other, or they’ll mix. Directly mixing them together will cause you to end up with a pink mixture of both. Which you can still serve, just call it a love potion then and pretend it was intentional. ^_~

To keep the layers from mixing, you’ll need some kind of tool. For the potion bottle here, I used a wooden skewer. You could also use a metal skewer, a straw, or a spoon if you can fit it in the opening of your glass. Given the small mouth of the potion bottle I needed the skewer since a spoon wouldn’t fit.

To get the layered effect, very slowly pour the liquid down the skewer so it gently fills on top of the previous layer. Angle the skewer diagonally, with the tip touching the side of the bottle. This way, the liquid runs the length and then meets the glass side and continues running down to gently sit on top. This keeps the liquid from agitating the bottom layer too much and mixing everything together. I think the layered effect is so simple, but makes this Pheonix Breath drink a classy and festive Halloween cocktail.

Secrets to Success

  • Follow the instructions carefully to keep the layers from mixing. You can use any long and skinny (and foodsafe) implement to get the desired effect.
  • Make sure not to shake up the mixture, or the mixture could end up pink! Although if that happens, just call it a love potion, and you’ve still got yourself a Halloween cocktail.

Instructions

  • Pour ½ oz of grenadine into the potion bottle or glass for serving.
  • Pour 1½ oz raspberry liquor into the potion bottle or glass for serving. If you want to keep them separate use the same technique as the next step, however I usually just let them mix.
  • Optional: I recommend pouring your lemon-lime soda into a glass, or measuring cup.
  • Using a wooden or metal skewer (or a spoon if you have an opening wide enough to use), angle the instrument diagonally, so the tip is touching the side of your glass or bottle. Gently and slowly pour the lemon-lime soda down the instrument so it gently flows and sits on top of the red layer.
  • Make sure not to stir or shake and serve cold.
