orange truffles rolled in sugar

I love making orange truffles, and I’m so excited to add these orange sugar truffles to the repertoire. The original recipe for orange truffles I shared previously is still a staple for me. The silken center is creamy and delicious, and they’re enrobed in a delicious candy coating. But sometimes you just want easy, you know? Delicious and easy and chocolately. And that’s where these orange sugar truffles come in.

You can’t get much better than four ingredients! The key here is the orange extract, which will save you a few ingredients and a lot of steps. In order to get the orange flavor from scratch, you’ll need to steep the cream with the orange peel. But if you have orange extract, it’s really as simple as making a delicious ganache and adding the flavoring. But the ease of four ingredients is pretty hard to beat.

As for the coating, orange sugar truffles are coated in–you guessed it: orange sugar! I wanted a little variety in my holiday truffle box this year (check out the ultimate holiday truffle guide for more truffle ideas). I usually coat freeform truffles in cocoa powder, like these raspberry chambord truffles. Rolling the truffles in cocoa powder is always an option if that’s your preference! But I like the little bit of crunch that the orange sugar gives these bite-sized orange sugar truffles.

But what is orange sugar? It’s really just plain white sugar mixed with orange zest. It’s amazing how flavorful just a little bit of zest can make some sugar. And once you roll your orange sugar truffles in your orange sugar, you can keep it on hand for all sorts of other things! Add it to your coffee or tea for a citrus twist, or use it in replace of regular sugar in recipes. For example, this orange sugar would make for a delicious brownie.

Plus the orange sugar makes for a pretty finish. It makes it easier to identify the truffles as orange flavored when you can see flecks of the orange zest tossed on the orange sugar. It’s really amazing how much a little zest packs a punch. A little goes a long way. That said, I like to just use whatever I have on hand, because I like the strong, potent flavor. It takes a lot of orange to overpower the sweet chocolate. Unlike mint, which can very easily be overpowering.

Secrets to Success

  • I love the orange sugar coating on these orange sugar truffles. It adds a delicious crunch and helps lend a little coating to the truffles which makes them easier to handle. If you’re not feeling the sugar coating (although I highly recommend it), you can always go with a classy and easy cocoa powder dusting.
  • If you’re looking for a more traditional orange truffle recipe, check out this previous recipe I shared. But these orange sugar truffles are perfect for quick and easy, and don’t require any coating and dipping in chocolate.
  • Save the extra orange sugar for other uses! Try adding it to coffee or teas for a delicious citrus twist, or replace regular white sugar in a recipe, like for brownies to get a hint of orange. Or just make more truffles. Can’t go wrong with more chocolate! We all know everything is best with chocolate~

Instructions

  • In a microwave safe bowl, add the 5oz of chocolate and the 2 Tbsp of heavy cream. Microwave for about 30 seconds on high, or until chocolate and cream are heated through. Do not overheat.
  • Mix together until cream is incorporated, making a creamy and smooth chocolate.
  • Add the ½ tsp orange extract and stir until combined.
  • Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm but pliable, similar to a soft fudge consistency.
  • [Optional] Make orange sugar by mixing together 3 Tbsp. of sugar and zest from ¼-½ an orange. Use a fork or a single chopstick to stir and break apart any clumps of zest.
  • On a small plate, or in a small dish, pour out your coating of choice: cocoa powder, sugar, or orange sugar.
  • Taking two spoons, drop approx. 1 Tbsp of firmed chocolate mixture into the coating and toss to cover. Roll the truffle into a ball between your two hands. Dust your hands with cocoa powder or sugar to help with sticking.
