maple sugar cookies;
Your one-stop-shop for yummy cookies with that splash of gourmet! Check out pudding sprinkle cookies and cake batter chocolate chip cookies for some other gourmet takes! These maple sugar cookies came out fabulous, with no more than a hint of maple, though you could definitely taste it, which is perfect for me. Sometimes if not done properly, I find maple syrup cloyingly sweet.
Do make sure you’re using that real stuff instead of the stuff that is basically corn syrup with some brown tint. Because it is used as the flavoring in this recipe, you won’t really get that maple flavor unless you use good quality maple syrup. And keep in mind that that generally means the expensive stuff! It’s always shocking to me how expensive it is, but I buy the big jugs, which take me a long time to go through, so it’s worth the investment to always have some around.
Honestly, I could take or leave the frosting. I think it looks cute visually, but personally I find that sugar cookies don’t really need extra sugar. I will say that at some point, I’d love to try this same recipe, but topped with bits of bacon sprinkled over the still warm icing. Maple-bacon has become a thing lately, and while not necessarily my favorite, it would be fun to have a trendy variation!
Perfect to send home or pack into cute little bags too, which is what I did! We had a super full day a few months ago with two friends from Baltimore who came to visit us. T and I have been talking with C and G forever about going to one of our local joints–Port City Brewery! (I need to write up a review for them…) It’s just a fun place and because G brews his own beer, we felt like they’d appreciate it. And we also went to one of our favorite restaurants in Tyson’s, Da Domenico (another review waiting to happen!), which has actually been around since T’s dad worked in the area like 20+ years ago! Pretty crazy, but there’s a reason it stuck around for so long–it’s great food at an affordable price! After a long day of drinking though, and an hour long drive back for G and C, I just sent them home with some cookies so we wouldn’t just stuff ourselves and burst!
