event review: engagement (italian winemakers dinner);

March 24, 2017Katie

So I’m finally going to share with you all the story of our engagement!  It’s been a whirlwind few weeks as you can imagine–I can’t believe Tyler and I have only been engaged for 3 weeks!  It’s amazing how time flies–I’ve already been looking at venues, and now we’ve also been looking at houses…so you can imagine how crazy it is around here!  But let’s go back to the beginning.

I had zero idea.  Absolutely none.  Tyler and I have talked about the future pretty regularly, we’re both very clearly invested in our relationship, and saw ourselves together in the long-term.  We’d always discussed how we both love the fall and that would be a perfect time to get married.  In our conversations Tyler had pretty adamantly professed that long engagements were silly, and so I figured he might propose at the end of the year, and we’d get married in 2018.

March 4th, was just a date night weekend for all I knew–just a plan to spend some time together at a few of our favorite local wineries.  We spent the morning at the dog park, playing with some shiba friends and hanging out with their parents!  Then we were off home to board Kenichi for the night–I knew we had dinner plans, so we wouldn’t be around for dinner, so we wanted to make sure he was taken care of!

Then we went to Mediterranean Cellars (tipsychocochip review), our favorite winery!  Did a tasting, got to just sit around and chat, I made jokes about “putting a ring on it” in complete jest, and the lady doing our tasting told us how cute we were.  Then we were off to another winery, La Grange, for an Italian Wine Maker’s dinner!

Overall it was a fun experience, but grain of salt here, since clearly this night will forever be treasured.  It was fun!  They had a spread of appetizers and a pre-release wine for us to try, things like a spread of olives and cheese, vegetarian stuffed shells, bruschetta, etc.  It was very nicely set up, although there were enough people that it was a little hard to circulate through.

Then on to the main course: spaghetti, broccoli rabe, stuffed shells, and garlic bread!  Honestly I found the wines more impressive than the food–I love me a garlicky, buttery, garlic bread and unfortunately it was a little dry.  The other food was tasty, but nothing special.  Still, the winemaker talked to us throughout the entire meal about the variety of wines to taste, and made the experience very enjoyable.  Finished with a coffee bean tiramisu cake, it was a tasty meal!

Then we headed home, singing sappy love songs in the car, and when we walked in there were candles lighting up the stairs and all across all the tables up in our living room.  Of course, the first thing I said was  “When did you light these candles?” to which Tyler replied “Don’t worry about it.”  And me, still being obtuse, was like “I am concerned about it, I don’t want to burn our place down!”

We came upstairs, and he pulled out a letter he had written so he wouldn’t forget what he wanted to say, and I could barely focus because my mind was working furiously wondering if what I thought was happening was actually happening.  And it was!  He got down on one knee, and next thing I know, we’re engaged.  I’m sure you’ll hear much more of our life story as it unfolds, but right now…it’s time to celebrate!
