brunch review: potomac point winery;
Potomac Point Winery is down south of NoVA, rather than west like a lot of other wineries we frequent. We were actually looking at it as a possible wedding venue, though jury’s out if it’ll make the cut! It’s a gorgeous property, and not too bad to find.
We’ll kick off the review with brunch: the food was delicious! Tyler and I were both starving after our wedding venue tour, so that probably added a few points in their favor. But the food we had was delicious! I went with a grilled chicken, pesto, and sweet pepper flatbread. It was even better than I imagined–loaded up with lots of toppings that it made it a little hard to pick up and eat. Probably could have done with a bit more cheese in my opinion, but then my cheese standards are different than other people’s. And while more cheese would have been yummy, I didn’t really feel like I was missing out on much the way it was.
Tyler went with the crab benedict, which was delicious, and it even came with a side of hash browns. The has browns were a perfect combination of crispy and floppy, and came as more of a sort of hash brown cake than free-form hash browns. For dessert we went for the “pot ‘o gold”, a caramel custard topped with brownie crumbles and caramel popcorn. It was delicious! Think slightly thicker than a creme brûlée caramel custard, without the burnt sugar, and then topped with some brownie crumbles, a scattering of popcorn, and a dollop of whipped cream. It was an interesting combination, but Tyler and I scarfed it down, so you know it was good!
After brunch, we did a wine tasting, and honestly I’m sad to say that I really didn’t find their wines particularly interesting. There were even a few I really wouldn’t want to drink, and that’s saying something coming from the girl that will generally drink whatever you put in front of her. All the wines were on the dry side, and the residual dryness spilled over into the sweeter wines, which didn’t really help my experience. A few to note: our favorite red was the Coyote Cave Red, full bodied and easy to drink. Another was the Dolce Rubus, a unique raspberry flavored wine that while still dry, when paired with chocolate, makes for a decadent experience. Unfortunately I find them lacking in the sipping wine category, which is generally where I like to spend my time. They also allowed us to try the mulled wine, which I will say was quite good.
Overall, 5 out of 5 chips (read: stars) for food, but an unfortunate 2.5 out of 5 chips for the winery bit of the experience. Sure there are things I don’t mind drinking, but nothing wow’ed my pallet, especially after the high expectations the food set!
