Kitchen sink brownies

As a home baker trying every recipe under the sun, I’m often left with odds and ends and tidbits of random sweets in my pantry. And the best way to use them up is with these everything but the kitchen sink brownies! Because what better way to make something delicious…than with chocolate?!

We start with my all-time favorite crinkle top brownies because this recipe has never steered me wrong. It’s a simple recipe and it makes perfect brownies every time. I love the instant coffee. It adds nuance and makes the chocolate pop but it’s not strong enough to add coffee flavor to your bite. The top is crinkly. The edges are chewy. The center is smooshy and dense. It’s chocolatey. No reason to mess with perfection right?

Kitchen sink brownies

Everything but the kitchen sink brownies comes from all the extra goodies you add in from there. In this batch, I used gluten-free pretzels, random crushed-up Butterfinger bits, birthday cake Oreos, and toffee bits. My goal was to use up odds and ends I had in my kitchen that weren’t enough for another recipe or (let’s be honest) were a little old and no longer fresh. It’s not like toffee goes bad sitting on the shelf but when I can’t remember when I bought it…that might be an indication to use it up or throw it out.

This batch had gluten free pretzels, crushed butterfingers, birthday cake Oreos, and toffee bits. But choose your own adventure! Try things like graham crackers or peanuts, or swirls of biscoff spread.

But why stop there? Choose your own adventure! Try things like fun chocolate chips: mint chocolate, butterscotch, or pumpkin spice! (Not together—that sounds terrible.) Add Graham crackers, or caramel bits, or extra chocolate chunks. Add marshmallows, fluff, or biscoff spread. Heck, add leftover pie filling, or fresh fruit past its prime. Any kind of cookie, peanuts, or any nuts really add a nice crunch. Add leftover chocolate Halloween candy, chopped to bits.

Because these everything but the kitchen sink brownies are so dense and moist, I actually prefer gluten-free baked items where I can. Gluten-free pretzels for example will keep their crunch a bit better because they’re a little snappier than their gluten-full counterparts. But the same applies to graham crackers, cookies, cookies, and anything else you can think of.

I actually prefer gluten-free add-ins where it makes sense. They’re a little drier than their gluten-full counterparts usually, so they keep their snappiness better for longer.

Also when you’re adding in all the goodies to your everything but the kitchen sink brownies batter, make sure you hold back some of each topping. Just a small handful or less. This way you can sprinkle the top of your brownies with the assortment of toppings. Not only is it visually appealing but everyone will know what’s contained in the mix.

Make sure to gently press any large chunky toppings into the batter. You want the batter to help them stick and keep them planted, otherwise you’ll have some runaways. The best part of everything but the kitchen sink brownies is that every bite is kind of a surprise. You never quite know what you’re gonna get.

Instructions

  • Line a 9"x13" pan with parchment paper. Spray with oil and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, add 2 cups of semisweet chocolate chips and 2 sticks (1 cup) of butter. Microwave in 30 second increments until the butter is melted and the chocolate chips begin to melt. Stir together until melted and smooth.
  • Add 1½ cups sugar, 1 Tbsp vanilla, 1 tsp salt, and 2½ tsp coffee granules to the melted chocolate. Mix together to combine.
  • In a small bowl, add 4 eggs and whisk together until frothy and bubbly. Fold the scrambled eggs to the chocolate mixture.
  • Add ½ cup flour, ½ cup cocoa powder, and 1 tsp baking powder. Stir to combine. Do not overmix.
  • Add roughly half each of the crushed oreos, toffee bits, crushed pretzels, and butterfinger bits. Fold in gently until evenly stirred into the batter.
  • Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Take remaining toppings and sprinkle them over top. Gently press the larger chunks (like oreos and pretzels) into the top to make sure they stick.
  • Bake for 30-32 minutes or until the brownies are just set. Test the center with a toothpick, it should come out clean when they're ready.
  • Allow to cool before cutting and serving fresh. To reheat, try popping them in the microwave for 10 seconds and serve with ice cream!

    5 stars
Great brownies, exactly like the recipe promises, and a great way to use up odds and ends of dessert/snack foods.
